The Great American Flying Egg

A week ago Friday (April 29th), Logan’s class did an egg drop. They have been studying oviparous animals (those that come from an egg), have been hatching chicks in their classroom and were given the following assignment:

1. Place a raw egg in a zip lock bag.

2. Put the egg in a container no bigger than 7 X 7 X 7, packing it any way you want so that it will survive a fall from the roof of the elementary school building.

What we did:

1. Wrapped a raw egg in bubble wrap then placed it in the zip lock bag

2. Lined the inside of a deli meat container (plastic) with more bubble wrap, put the egg inside and packed smaller bits of bubble wrap around it

3. Taped the lid on tight with duct tape

4. Attached a parachute and wings (parachute from the playroom, wings from construction paper that Logan made)

5. Per Logan’s instructions, we put on another piece of tape and labeled his creation “The Great American Flying Egg”.

6. Tested it by throwing it countless time from the balcony of the house

7. Gathered at 1:30 to watch Logan’s class and 2 others have their eggs dropped and tallied either as “humpties” or “lumpties” (humpty eggs broke just like the egg in the story and Lumpty eggs survived the fall). Some of the kids creations were hysterical…parachutes, one was stuffed inside a small bear, one had a layer of foam on the bottom to cushion the landing etc etc.

Here is the label on Logan’s egg container:IMG_6474

I refused to cut the army man off the really nice parachute toy Meemaw gave him so we taped him on top. IMG_6475

Logan really wanted to wear something to go along with his “Great American” theme. This shirt has the word “Division” on the bottom of it so we put a piece of tape above that and wrote “Egg Drop” so that the shirt read “Egg Drop Division” IMG_6476

The assistant principal and the head of facilities did the dropping honors. Each kid stood up when it was their turn. The others sat in groups on the sidewalk below and watched. We got really lucky and had a nice day. Plus…daddy was able to work from the area and I let Aiden blow off school so we could go as a family. Aiden helped with design, construction and testing so he was pretty bummed to hear that he would miss the event…couldn’t let that happen ;)IMG_6484

This is like a victory sign or something…Logan’s egg survived the fall!! YEAH! IMG_6500

After the egg dropping was over the kids had a scheduled walk around the school for Autism awareness. Logan said his eyes hurt so I let him borrow my sunglasses…with strict instructions to bring them home…which he did not…but they were found on the playground and I got them back the next Monday. Daddy videotaped the whole thing:

Awww man! We had total crackage! Same with when Paige was in K! Maybe my third time will be the charm! I wanted to do a parachute, but thought it was against the rules. Next time: rules shmules!

About Me

My photo
Stories about BRLAB: Brian & Renay, two relatively sane parents, and our three adorable, but active boys: Logan - 9, Aiden - 7 and Brady - 6. I started this blog to document our adventures and milestones for those family members who are far away and can't always share the fun in person. This blog has become my way to keep track of everything in the lives of my growing boys - from the super big stuff that seems the most important to the small things that probably really ARE the most important. I always include tons of pictures because I plan to make a book out of the blog on a yearly basis. Time flies by so fast, I can only hope that these posts will help us remember all the wonderful and silly times we have together as a family.
